Koh Trong- Pamelo awarded Geographical indication

Pomelo (ក្រូចថ្លុង in khmer language) grown and harvested in Koh Trong island of Kratie was awarded GI (Geographical indication) status thus becoming the third national product to obtain GI, the other two being Kampot pepper and palm sugar from Kampong Speu.

Pomelos from Koh Trong have been enjoying great popularity all over the country since early 60s. Since then it has also become one of the important fruit exports in Cambodia. It is a traditional local agricultural product though in order to get a sweet and juicy fruit pomelo farmers should look after the process of growing very carefully.
A geographical identification may act as a confirmation or certification of the quality of the product produced or grown in a specific geographical location and thus possessing a certain set of qualities and characteristics.

The success of Koh Trong's pomelo may possibly inspire local farmers and artisans to apply for GI with other agricultural, textile and handicraft products.
